To add new citations to a case in Equinox you would need to:
1. Go to the Family tab of the relevant case
2. Create an ‘Extended Family’
3. Once the Extended Family is created, go to the Family tab, click on the ‘Manage Citations’ button in the top right
4. Click ‘New Citation’ in the top right
5. Select the ‘Type’ of citation you want to add
There are two types of citations that can be added to a case:
- Patent Citations
- Non-Patent Literature Citations
Please see the sections below for more information on how to add each type.
Add Patent Citations
When selecting ‘Patent’ as the citation type, users will need to complete the following fields:

Source | This is the source of the citation. The default Source options are listed below:

Number Type | Based on the details of the patent being cited, select the relevant information you will enter in Equinox:
- Application Filing Number - Grant/Reg Number - Pub/Adv Number |
Date | Enter the application, grant/reg OR pub/adv date as specified above. |
Country | Enter the application, grant/reg OR pub/adv country. |
Code* | Enter the application, grant/reg OR pub/adv number (required). Note: If this is not entered users will see a warning ‘Error - A patent number is required’ when trying to save. |
Applicant | Enter the applicant of the cited patent. |
Pages, columns, lines containing relevant information | Record the details of any parts of the patent that are relevant as part of the citation. |
Notes | Add any additional notes. (Sometimes used to record the dates of any citations following the initial citation date). |
Translation Document | If the original patent/document is in another language, a translation document can be selected. This drop down lists all files uploaded to the Documents tab of each case within the Extended Family. Only one document can be linked to a citation. |
- Click ‘Save’
The details of the new citation will now be available on the Manage Citations screen in the ‘Cited Patents’ table.
Add Non-Patent Literature Citations
When selecting ‘Non-Patent Literature’ as the citation type, users will need to complete the following fields:

Source | This is the source of the citation. The default Source options are listed below:

Date | Enter the date of the citation publication. |
Non-Patent Literature* | Enter the title of the citation publication/literature (required). Note: If this is not entered users will see a warning ‘Error - For non-patent literature a text based reference is required’ when trying to save. |
Pages, columns, lines containing relevant information | Record the details of any parts of the literature that are relevant as part of the citation. |
Notes | Add any additional notes. (Sometimes used to record the dates of any citations following the initial citation date). |
Translation Document | If the original document/literature is in another language, a translation document can be selected. This drop down lists all files uploaded to the Documents tab of each case within the Extended Family. Only one document can be linked to a citation. |
